David R. Stone
Professor of History
Kansas State University

I have taught at Kansas State University since 1999.  After graduating from Wabash College, I received my Ph.D in Russian history from Yale University in 1997. I offer courses in Russian, European, and South Asian history. You can also view my course syllabi online, along with some helpful guides to writing papers in history classes

My research interests include the military and political history of the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the collapse of Communism and the creation of post-Soviet Russia.  My publications include a prize-winning book on the creation of the Soviet military-industrial complex in the 1920s and 1930s, a general military history of Russia, an edited volume on the Soviet Union during the Second World War, and articles and book chapters on Soviet military history and international politics. A brief summary of my work with commentary is available here, and my books are available here. A complete list of my publications is available in my vita.

I am slowly putting some important sources in Russian / Soviet military history, translated into English, online.

I have also written a brief guide designed to help undergraduates with the process of applying to graduate school. You can view it here: Guide to Applying to Graduate School in History

I have collected a number of links to helpful advice on the practical and professional sides of becoming an historian, and have also presented my thoughts on successfully teaching undergraduate history survey courses. You can read my thoughts on what makes for a good dissertation prospectus here.

Along with a number of colleagues, I blog about Russian military history at The Russian Front.
